Another unique feature of Pixen is custom backgrounds. Open a document, and click the Backgrounds button on the toolbar to get started.
Here, you can configure how the background is drawn: flat, striped, checkered, or with an image. This selection renders below transparent pixels of the canvas.
Just drag and drop.
If you'd like, you can specify an alternate background. The background will change when your mouse leaves the image, allowing you to see how your sprite looks on, say, a grass tile.
If you make a particularly cool background configuration, you can save it to use in other documents or share with your friends.
